Boss Hogg Roofing was founded in August of 2022 by Scott Boros and Darlene Lopez with a clear vision: to bring a higher level of service, transparency, and customer care to an industry where those qualities were often overlooked.
Both Scott and Darlene spent more than 25 years working in the restaurant and hospitality industry, where customer experience, attention to detail, and communication are everything. Those years shaped their approach to business and taught them the importance of taking care of people first.
In 2021, Scott made the decision to step away from the restaurant industry and pursue a new career path in roofing. The transition into roofing came naturally. During high school, Scott studied CAD drafting with a basic background in mechanical engineering and architectural design, which helped him quickly understand the structural and operational aspects of roofing systems.
As Scott entered the roofing industry, his background in architectural design proved to be extremely valuable. Understanding how structures are designed helped him quickly adapt to the installation and operations involved with asphalt shingle roofs, tile roofing systems, and metal roofing systems.
What truly set Scott apart, however, was his hospitality background. After years of working directly with customers, he understood how to listen to homeowners, identify their concerns, and guide them through solutions. Whether a homeowner needs a full roof replacement, a repair, or assistance navigating an insurance claim, the goal is always the same: provide transparency, clear communication, and support throughout the entire roofing process.
This approach helped shape the philosophy behind Boss Hogg Roofing. Homeowners are not just customers—they are partners in the process. The goal is to provide peace of mind, trust, and confidence when protecting one of the most important investments a person can make: their home.
When the company was officially launched in 2022, it was done with the partnership and financial support of Darlene Lopez, who also brings more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry. While Scott focuses on field operations and customer relationships, Darlene plays a vital role behind the scenes managing operations, accounting, and organization, helping ensure the business runs smoothly.
Naturally, one of the most common questions people ask is about the name.
Being proud Houstonians, we often hear: “Why Boss Hogg?”
Some people assume the name comes from Jefferson Davis “Boss” Hogg from The Dukes of Hazzard. Others think it might be connected to Houston culture, like the rapper Slim Thug and the Boss Hogg Outlawz.
The truth is, the inspiration actually comes from Scott and Darlene’s shared love of great food, memorable restaurants, and fine spirits.
In 2016, Scott had the opportunity to meet David Pickerell, the master distiller behind WhistlePig Bourbon, during a small seminar in the hospitality industry. At the time, the distillery was still a small and growing operation based between Canada and Vermont. Pickerell was known not only for his craft but also for his passion for education and mentorship.
During the seminar, he spoke about the importance of continual improvement, evolving knowledge, and maintaining high standards in your craft. His message left a lasting impression on Scott, who quickly became a fan of both the bourbon and what it represented.
Sadly, David Pickerell passed away in 2018, but the philosophy he shared remained memorable. When Scott and Darlene were creating their company in 2022, they reflected on that experience and the meaning behind “The Boss Hog,” one of WhistlePig’s most celebrated bourbons.
The name stuck—and Boss Hogg Roofing was born.
